Does Homemade Dusting Polish Really Work?
Here in northeastern PA, aka NEPA, spring is getting ready to break through the cold and that means getting a jump on spring cleaning. So after running my ozone to settle the dust and filling an oversized garbage bag with most of my standard chemical cleaners, I was ready to take the plunge into homemade cleaner territory. I decided to start by following a recipe from email@example.com for a three-ingredient, chemical-free dusting spray polish.
The recipe calls for:
1 cup white vinegar
1/2 teaspoon olive oil
3 cups water
I own a few standard spray bottles for home projects and gardening, about 22 ounces each, which I bought from my local beauty supply store (you can also get them from a dollar store). I was sure to choose a brand new bottle since I am working with vinegar and do not want any strange chemical reactions. I started by cleaning out the bottle with water and vinegar and then I prepared the recipe.
Because of the bottle’s small size, I cut the recipe in half. I added about 1 1/2 – 2 cups of water, 1/2 cup of white vinegar, and 1/ tsp of olive oil to my bottle and then I replaced the spray lid and gave it a good shake to integrate all the ingredients. (TIP: If you need help cutting down a recipe, check out Taste of Home’s post.)
Lastly, I grabbed an old, lived-in tee shirt and cut it in half to use as a cleaning cloth and then I got to work. I immediately noticed a difference and the finish was perfect and shiny, but not greasy or slippery, like Pledge.
I was confident this would also work on my hardwood floors, so I went ahead and cleaned the whole room with the spray, floors and all! The spray left my floor clean without dangerous slippery conditions. Furthermore, this polish left my whole room perfectly fresh and clean with a lovely shine without any smell at all. To get rid of any additional dust I may have missed, I followed up with another dose of my ozone.
I had a perfect night’s sleep without any headaches due to lingering dust. My room looks fantastic and smells fresh without a chemical smell. I feel happy that it took less than two minutes to gather up the materials and mix up the spray, and it cost next to nothing! I highly recommend tossing your commercial furniture polish and try this spray polish instead. I guarantee you won’t be disappointed!
